Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quintet are celebrating their 25th year as a performing ensemble. Based in northeastern Pennsylvania, they travel nationally in offering concerts and jazz vespers. With a core rhythm section of Bill Carter on piano, Tony Marino on bass, and Ron Vincent on drums, this year’s SJF special edition quintet features saxophonist Nelson Hill and trombonist Andrew Williams. “We play jazz for people who didn’t know that they like jazz,” Carter notes. With ten CDs and two DVDs to their credit, the band’s songbook draws from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Vince Guaraldi, and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as the 100+ compositions that Bill has written for the group. Collectively, the band members have performed with Phil Woods, Jimmy Knepper, Jim McNeely, Michael Holober, Sherrie Maricle, Dave Brubeck, David Liebman, Bobby McFerrin, and Freddie Hubbard, among many others.
